About Project Nursery

Green Umbrella Organisation established a native plant nursery which provides the foundation for ongoing sustainable forest restoration and community development projects in and around Thane and Mumbai cities since August 2010.

The nursery centre also acts as a training centre for local people and an environmental education facility. A few years on, the nursery has now been built, staffed and opened for community programs.

Ecological surveys are also being conducted to examine the existing forest and to identify important tree species to be propagated in the nursery.

The Green Umbrella Tree Nursery Project was started in August 2010 and now we have more than 2,000 seedlings of 30 native species in the nursery and 1,000 seedlings have already been planted in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Aims of the Project Nursery

The central aim of the projects is essentially to reforest unproductive land. This may be to provide increased habitat for wildlife, prevent erosion or to increase local access to forest products.
  • To plant native tree species to restore the forest for conservation
  • To improve soil quality
  • Contribute to climate stability through carbon sequestration in the forest above and below ground biomass
  • To develop this area for schools and communities to use as a recreation site or an outdoor classroom

Green Umbrella Organisation makes sincere appeal not to cut branches of Banyan tree to celebrate the occasion of Vat-Pornima, instead try to adopt a Banyan Sapling and then donate it to our organisation.
